Your brain is the "boss" of your body.
But did you know that in your brain is the boss of the brain? When children have opportunities to develop executive function and self-regulation skills, individuals and society experience lifelong benefits. These skills are crucial for learning and development. They also enable positive behavior and allow us to make healthy choices for ourselves and our families.
Executive function and self-regulation skills depend on three types of brain function: working memory, mental flexibility, and self-control. These functions are highly interrelated, and the successful application of executive function skills requires them to operate in coordination with each other.
Why is Executive Functioning Important?
It manages the following:
1.Planning, organizing and time management
2.The "Selfs": Self Talk/Self Thought (Metacognition) and Self-Control
3.Getting started (Task Initiation), Attention and Working (short term) Memory
4.Flexible Thinking and Grit (Perseverance)
5.Emotional Regulation, Prioritizing, Judgment (hindsight and foresight)
We need to make sure these skills are taught and included into IEPs.
